These 10-frame telescoping tops are truly one-of-a-kind. We don't think you'll find anything else quite like them. The frame is made out of premium kiln-dried solid 100%, Western Cedar. Using cedar components in your beehive provides many advantages. Not only does cedar have an exceptional strength for weight bearing and contain natural tannins that protect against rotting and decay, but more importantly it is extremely sustainable. If cared for properly, cedar hive components can last for decades which means less use of other natural resources. And even though they cost a little more than standard pine and metal telescoping tops, we think you could save money in the end since they won't need to be replaced as often. In addition, kiln-drying ensures consistent moisture levels in the wood which minimizes warping and cracking.
Another feature that we especially like about these telescoping tops is that the top part is made of a heavy-duty molded aluminum wrapped in white, food-grade polyurethane plastic. It is domed slightly in the middle with 1" eaves around all four sides, both of which allow for rain and moisture to easily run off. This metal top is securely attached to the cedar frame without any gaps or holes.
Unlike other softwood frame telescoping tops, cedar can be left unpainted to weather naturally over time which will eventually turn the wood into a grey patina color. Alternatively, they can be sealed with a coat of pure Tung oil. They come completely assembled and ready-to-use. They measure 19" wide x 23 1/4" long x 2 1/2" tall and fit on 10-frame hives.
