Description

Also known as "groundnuts" or "goobers", in a botanical sense peanuts are a member of the legume (bean or pea) family. A legume is an edible seed enclosed within a pod. In a culinary and nutritional sense, peanuts are known as a nut and are the most popular choice of nut in the US accounting for approximately 67% of all nut consumption. In contrast to tree nuts, peanuts grown underground. They are known as a good crop rotation plant as they have the property of putting nitrogen back into the soil.

Peanuts are packed with nutrition. They contain approximately 25 grams of protein per 100 gram serving which is a higher protein content than many other types of tree nuts. They are an excellent source of B vitamins, vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, phosphorous and dietary fiber. Their oil composition is made up of approximately 46% monounsaturated fat (primarily oleic acid), 32% polyunsaturated fat (primarily linoleic acid) and 17% saturated fat (primarily palmitic acid).

Originating from South America, peanuts are now widely used as an ingredient all over the world in both savory and sweet dishes. They are well known as an ingredient for making spicy sauces such as satay, as well as for using as an ingredient in candy, cakes and cookies.

Our oil roasted, salted blanched peanuts are grown in the US. They are blanched which means they are plunged into boiling water for a couple of minutes and then put into an ice bath. This allows for the skins to be easily removed and for the color to stay lighter. Blanched peanuts are mostly used in cooking and baking rather than for snacking.
