Whole Nutmeg


With a distinctive, pungent fragrance and warm, slightly sweet flavor, nutmeg is most commonly used in baked goods, confections, meats, sausage, sauces, and seasonal beverages.

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is the seed from the fruit of dark-leaved evergreen trees that grow predominately in Indonesia. The seed of the fruit is dried gradually in the sun for 6 to 8 weeks. While it is drying the nutmeg kernel shrinks away from the hard shell of the seed until the kernels rattle inside. Once they are completely dried, the shell is broken leaving the whole nutmeg kernel.

The product shelf life is dependent on storage conditions and is highly variable. The product should be stored under cool, dry conditions and in a humidity-controlled environment.  The industry standard for shelf life, when stored under optimum conditions, is 24 months from the date of manufacture.
